Personal

Biography:

Joachim received an M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Antwerp in 2007. Since then, he's been pursuing a Ph.D. degree at the VisionLab of the University of Antwerp, under supervision of prof. dr. Paul Scheunders and dr. Wim D'haes (now at Mu Technologies).

Part of this research has been conducted at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (personal CCRMA webpage here) under guidance of prof. dr. Jonathan S. Abel. At this moment, another part is being completed as a visiting research student at Queen Mary University of London's Centre for Digital Music (personal C4DM webpage here) with prof. dr. Simon Dixon and prof. dr. Mark Plumbley.

His free time is spent playing lots of piano and getting involved in way too many extracurricular activities for the promotion of Computer Science education, as there are the ACM Antwerp Student Chapter and the Belgian Olympiad in Informatics.

Research

My main research interest is digital audio signal processing with applications in music. Topics include:

  • Music Information Retrieval
  • Machine Listening
  • Audio Source Separation
  • Symbolic representations of music

For a quick taste of interim results, check out a 2010 demo here, and some subsequent 2012 demos here.
